The riderless horse has been a tradition in military funerals since the time of Genghis Khan. The boots thrust in the stirrups backwards and saber in the reverse position emphasize the loss of the soldier.
Shoeing a horse at the Cavalry School in 1941. The horse shoeing school at Ft. Riley was founded in 1919. Each regiment had their own set of farriers.
